Chili Padi - Sign of over fertilized Chili Padi plant
As a beginner of gardening, I want to grow a Chili Padi plant.
It was bought from Giant supermarket and it was a happy plant when it comes home.
My first thought was - the plant has to be well fertilized. Without thinking about any consequences, I put in 2 full spoon of organic fertilizers into the pot (the more the better right!) and water it thoroughly.
And just 1 day, you will see the first sign of over fertilizing your plant.
First Sign - healthy green leave start to drop and it drops rapidly over days.
However, I did not realized that it is over fertilizing the plant because, at the same time, you will see droopy-ness of the leaves. This droopy-ness symptom actually mislead me because many website will say that it is due to either over / under water your plant. Since I water the plant thoroughly the day before, I assume that I had over watered the plant.
I bet you can guess my next move. Yes, I tried not to water it for the next 2 days. And it comes the next sign.
Second Sign - leave turns yellow and more leaves drop
Right - remaining leaves turns yellow and more leaves drop from the plant. Again, Google will tell me this is a sign of improper watering. To be honest, I am rather frustrated. How much water is enough? So, let's be systematic! Give the plant daily scheduled watering, and stupidly, more fertilizer!
Third Sign - leaves and stem turns brown
Of course my previous action won't help. And, yes, it may have worsen the situation. But at this point, I am seeing a lot of brown leaves and stem, and finally, I saw website saying that the plant could be over fertilized. Yes! What! Why didn't I think of that.
But, it is already too late. At 2 weeks mark, the plant look like this... :(
Come to think of this, I had a Pomegranate plant before this Chili Padi. Similarly, I poured 2 spoon full of organic fertilizer and it results in the same fate - bold plant, and of course, I blamed watering... :(
As a lesson learn, I am now very careful on the amount of fertilizer use for a plant. Over fertilizing will prevent the plant from that up water from the soil, resulting a leave-less plant.
What to do next? I tried to save the plant of course. Stay tuned on how!
